“We name everything, including our own intimate experience. ‘Sadness’, we say. ‘Anger’. ‘Fear’. ‘Frustration’. ‘Joy’. ‘Boredom’. ‘Longing’. But emotions are only energies in motion, and beyond the conceptual labels, without the words, we really have no way of knowing what we are experiencing. Take away the label ‘sadness’, and what is it? Take away the description ‘anger’, and what is it? Remove the concept ‘boredom’ and what is this raw life energy that pulsates in you? Become curious. Allow your present experience to become totally fascinating. Stop calling the energy ‘positive’ or ‘negative’, ‘light’ or ‘dark’, ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, and what is there? Come back to the sensations in the body. Raw life. The throb of mystery. Tingly, alive sensations – prickly, dull, warm, intense, fluttery – dancing in the belly, chest, neck, head. Inseparable from what you are. Intimate. Sacred. So present, alive only in this moment.”

“I’m trying to take everything away from you as you can see. Everything that you ever believed. Every concept you ever had. Every idea that you had of getting enlightened, becoming free, becoming liberated. Every idea and belief of thinking that you’re not liberated. That you have to get liberated. All of these things I’m trying to remove from your thinking patterns and then you remove your thinking patterns. You have to leave yourself empty, totally empty. To be totally fulfilled you’ve got to be totally empty first.”

Right in the middle of falling apart and holding it together

You are falling apart, and then holding it all together. Then falling apart, then holding it all together again. Love is being born within you, cleansing you from the inside, showing you how whole you really are. It is revealing the essence of what you are beyond that which comes and goes. It is showing you that you could never truly fall apart, because you were never together to begin with. You are beyond all that.

If you remain too identified with the falling apart, you disintegrate; you lose contact with the radiance within you, and you become misattuned to the unfolding of your somatic experience, which is the movement of pure wisdom. You forget how intelligent and how creative it is inside you, and that you are never, ever in need of fixing. You forget that the darkness, when provided sanctuary, is brighter than a thousand suns inside your heart.

But if you remain too identified with holding it all together, you disconnect from your vulnerability, from your untamed aliveness and spontaneity, and you turn from the wild reality that your heart could break at any moment. You forget that it is through your brokenness that your gifts pour into this world. You forget that each and every crack in your heart is an illumined portal through which the poetry of your life will flow.

Right in the middle of falling apart and holding it together is the secret place, is the luminous middle path. Stay there. For it is there where the light and the dark are in union, and where the beloved is waiting to play with your preciousness.

Call off the war

Will you make a commitment to no longer abandon yourself and your present experience? That no matter what thought, feeling, emotion, or sensation arises, you will offer it a home within you, setting aside the conclusion that it is a mistake, a problem which must be fixed, or evidence that something is wrong with you?

Begin with a sacred pause, touching whatever is there, and state your intention to stay close. Offer a heartfelt “yes” to your experience and allow it to be exactly as it is, cutting into the momentum of billions of lifetimes of turning from the orphaned ones knocking on the door of your heart. Call off the war with yourself, and see that arguing with reality will only ever lead to suffering for yourself and others.

From this ground of seeing and allowing, you could then enter into the most radical act of all: to meet whatever arises in your experience with what Rumi calls a mighty kindness. While it seems so simple, it is in fact a revolution in practice. Open your heart to your rage, your shame, your despair, and your sadness, gently holding and cradling it as you would a sweet little baby, unconditionally receiving it as a raging expression of reality exactly as it is. See that it, too, is path—come only to awaken one of the qualities of love within you.

It is through this wild kindness that you may finally see just how much space there is around your experience, how whatever appears—while very vivid, colorful, energetic, and even disturbing—is luminously transparent, and not nearly as solid as it seems. It is in and through your intimacy with your embodied, present experience that it will self-liberate, without any effort on your part, into the pristine, primordial awareness and love that you are.

Your Life Cannot Go Wrong

In reality, your world is set up so that nothing happens to you, but everything happens for you – for your awakening, for your growth, for your inspiration, for your exploration – even if you forget that, or sometimes cannot see it, or sometimes fall into distraction and despair.

When there is no fixed destination, you cannot ever lose your destination, so you cannot ever lose your path, so nothing that happens in your life can take you off your path. Your path IS what happens, and what happens IS your path. There is no other.

Everything is a gift on this unbreakable path that you call your life – the laughter, the tears, the times of great sorrow, the experiences of profound loss, the pain, the confusion, the times you believe you’ll never make it, even the overwhelming heartbreak of love – even if you forget that sometimes, or cannot see that sometimes, or lose faith absolutely in the entire show sometimes.

But even the loss of faith in the show is part of the show, and even the scene where ‘something goes wrong’ is not indicative of the show going wrong, and so you are always exactly where you need to be, believe it or not, even if you are not.

Life can be trusted absolutely, even when trust seems a million light-years away, and life cannot go wrong, for all is life, and life is all. Understand this, know it in your heart, and spirituality is profoundly simple, as simple as breathing, as natural as gazing up at the stars at night and falling into silent wonder. The universe is more beautiful than you could ever imagine.

Coming Home

Friend, when you feel broken, lost, far away from home, when enlightenment seems like another country and the words of the sages seem like fairy stories, when answers won’t come, and doubts rage like fire…

Stop. Breathe. Remember, nothing has gone ‘wrong’. A dream is dying, that is all, a second-hand dream of how this moment ‘should’ have been…

As the brokenness calls to you, as the doubts sing their crazy song, as stories cascade like oceans, remember that the very homesickness that you try to push away is actually inviting you to your true Home, Here and Now, prior to all earthly ‘homes’.

A problem is a situation that longs for kind attention. A crisis is a turning point. Dis-ease is a call for profound rest and release. Trauma is the invitation to the kind of acceptance you never even imagined. Raging doubts are explosions of supreme intelligence, calling you to deep trust in your own first-hand experience, a fearless plunge into the constant embrace of the Unknown.

Even when it all seems to be going wrong, stop and breathe and remember that nothing can go ‘wrong’ in the vast field of your undying presence.
